Help! I'm New to Yoga ...

If you’re about to attend your first yoga class, here are some of the most frequently asked questions:

Do I need to be fit?

No! If you can breathe, you can do yoga. Yoga can be practised by anyone, regardless of age, mobility or fitness. Beginners are always welcome.

What equipment do I need?

Yoga with Maria can provide you with all the equipment you will need but do feel free to bring your own if your prefer.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothes and bring an extra layer as it can get chilly during relaxation. You will need to remove your shoes and socks, as we practise in bare feet.

I have an injury/medical condition/I’m pregnant?

Please notify the instructor BEFORE class if you have any injuries or medical issues or if you have recently had surgery. If you are pregnant, I would advise attending a specialist pregnancy yoga class. Some classes are not suitable for pregnancy or certain medical conditions.

Should I eat before class?

It is best to avoid eating a large meal for about 3 hours before class. A light snack an hour before is fine. Do bring a water bottle in case you need to hydrate.

What time should I arrive?

Try to arrive 10 minutes early to give yourself time to settle in and to speak to your instructor about any concerns you may have.

Phones

Please turn off your mobile phone and any other device(s) before class.

Shoes

Please remove shoes before class. Please do not step over the mat(s) while wearing shoes and please avoid stepping on anyone else’s mat.

Are children welcome?

Classes are suitable for anyone aged 18 or over.

Is parking available?

Yes, free parking is available at all venues. Please do not obstruct the entrance. If the car park is full and you do have to park on the street, please ensure you park considerately.

What type of yoga do you teach?

My classes draw upon various styles of yoga but principally Hatha yoga, slow flow, Yin yoga and Restorative yoga. I also teach Chair Based yoga.

When will I start seeing the benefits?

That depends on how often you practise! Attending classes a couple of times a week or developing a regular home practice will bring about benefits to both body and mind.

What is yoga anyway?

Good question! There are many different types of yoga, but all usually encompass some posture work designed to build strength and flexibility over time together with breathing and relaxation techniques to help quieten and calm the mind. Yoga is not a religion. It is non-denominational and can be practised by anyone, regardless of their spiritual and/or religious beliefs.
